On May 15, 2010, an anticipated 250 volunteers will be participating in "Rock the Block,” a cleanup of a three block area within King Irving. This event will give volunteers and homeowners the opportunity to work together on neighborhood projects and develop stronger community bonds. In observance of AmeriCorps Week 2010, the neighborhood beautification project will provide volunteer opportunities for landscaping, trimming bushes and trees, planting, small home projects, cleaning, painting, trash pick-up, etc.
The morning includes a performance by hip hop band "Below Zero” singing the "Rock the Block” theme song, welcome speeches and the service project to help beautify and assist residents near Evelyn Davis Park in Des Moines along 14th Street and Carpenter Avenue. Volunteer registration will begin at 7:45am and will continue to be open until service project wraps up at noon.
There will also be a social in the afternoon (Noon-4pm) where neighborhood and Oakridge children and families, volunteers and community partners can participate in fun activities including crafts, games, and music to celebrate the completion of the community service project while learning more about the AmeriCorps program and opportunities with Habitat for Humanity. There will also be another musical performance by "Below Zero.”
