To ignite the AmeriCorps Alums JUNE Month of Service, alums are sparking this month of service in the Gulf by convening in the Gulf Region to highlight the continued impact of AmeriCorps alumni from across the country.  To start the month off with a bang, we are asking that as many alums as possible deploy during the start of Memorial Day Weekend (May 27, 2006.) AmeriCorps Alums is working in conjunction with PICOACT, and Hands On Network, and through collaboration with these organizations, AmeriCorps alumni will be able to provide volunteer service in the following areas:
  • Home Gutting
  • Mold Remediation
  • Debris Removal
  • Food Preparation
  • Tool Bank Coordination
Once volunteers arrive at their deployment site, AmeriCorps Alums will provide full assistance with lodging, transportation, and food.  Because of health concerns, those persons with respiratory issues are encouraged to request volunteer activities with minimal health risks, such as tool bank coordination or food preparation. For the Month of Service, we are asking that all alumni deploy to our New Orleans or Biloxi sites, as we are pushing to demonstrate the concentrated impact of alumni. The Month of Service has three primary objectives:
  1. Highlight the continued impact of Alums well beyond their term of service
  2. Continue to promote the disaster response efforts of NCCC in the push to restore funding to this AmeriCorps program
  3. Empower our Alums to understand the devastation that occurred througout the Gulf, and carry that knowledge back with them for utilization in their own local communities
