GET YOUR DREAM is an event being hosted by the West Michigan AmeriCorps Collaborative in partnership with WGVU Public Television & Radio and Business Leaders Linked to Encourage New Directions (BL2END). The event is meant to bring community members together to examine the barriers faced by Grand Rapids Public Schools students that may impact their academic success & discuss ways that we can collectively overcome those barriers. We will hear directly from students, staff, and community partners engaged in the local schools. Exhibitors will have tables with information on programs supporting education and their current volunteer opportunities. Attendees will view the WGVU film, Get Your Diploma, Get Your Dream. The film is part of a national initiative supported by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). American Graduate: Let’s Make it Happen is public media’s long-term commitment to supporting community-based solutions to the dropout crisis. Following the film, a panel discussion with Q&A will give attendees the chance to gain an even more in-depth look at the issues. The event will wrap up with a letter writing project to local middle school students; asking participants to share their stories, encourage, and express their support for the student’s success.

The event will be held on Tuesday, January 20th from 4:00-6:00pm at Harrison Park School.

· Exhibitor tables will be set up to allow local youth programs (academic & otherwise) to share information with families & potential volunteers

· Attendees will view the WGVU film, Get Your Diploma. Get Your Dream.

· A panel made up of several students, district staff, and the filmmakers will answer questions & offer a more in-depth look into the creation of the film & the American Graduate-sparked initiative

· Attendees will wrap-up the event by writing letters of encouragement to local 8th graders (sharing their own experiences with school, the importance of education, and expressing their belief in the student’s potential for success)
