Clinton Proposes to Double Segal AmeriCorps Education Award

Tuesday, November 20, 2007

Presidential candidate Senator Hillary Clinton's recently released higher education plan includes infusing $8 billion per year toward higher education objectives, including a significant increase in the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award.  When President Bill Clinton created AmeriCorps in 1993, the Education Award covered 47% of the total cost of a four-year public school. Today – 13 years later – the amount of the education award has stayed the same while tuition and fees have grown dramatically. Clinton proposal will double the education award – now called the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award – to $10,000 to get it back on pace to covering a meaningful portion of the cost of going to college for people who devote a year or two of full-time public service to our country.
