On Sunday, June 1, 2008, at the opening session of the National Conference on Volunteering and Service, Congressman John Lewis (5th Congressional District-GA), announced his intention to work with Congress to eliminate taxation of the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award.  The announcement was met with thunderous applause by nearly 4,000 person audience- many of whom were alums.  Current research indicates the passage of this legislation would have an alumni impact of between $18 Million - $29 Million per year.  Over the next week to two weeks, more details are expected to be released about the specifics of the legislation.  At that time, AmeriCorps Alums will seek alumni support in taking action effort to eliminate taxation of the Segal AmeriCorps Ed Award.  Those interested in receiving more information immediately can contact Greg Heinrich at gheinrich@americorpsalums.org.
