ESPN Film Synopsis – Kabul Girls Club:
A short film titled Kabul Girls Club, a story of Afghani female liberation through sports, is slated to air September 12, 2007 at 4:25AM ET on ESPN2 (set your TIVO).  In 2001, the girls of Kabul hid under burkas, were confined to their houses, banned from school and denied any personal freedom. Many watched as their mothers and sisters were beaten; some executed publicly on the Olympic Stadium pitch. Today, the girls of Kabul are playing soccer on that same pitch. During the spring of 2006, AmeriCorps alum Awista Ayub, founder of the Afghan Youth Sports Exchange, took her soccer clinic to Kabul. Along with her she brought four Afghan American coaches from the US. The clinic ran in conjunction with the Afghanistan National Olympic Committee and saw over 250 girls from Kabul participate. Every girl was given a ball and a pair of cleats for participating. Practice was held on a military guarded field, but most importantly, it was held in the open. When the teams first began a few years back, all training was held behind closed doors. For these girls soccer is their outlet and expression of freedom. Through sport they have helped spark the women's revolution. Parents are beginning to encourage their daughters to play, despite opposition from most of Afghan society. In doing so, the idea of a female athlete is gradually becoming more acceptable. The confidence gained in sport carries over to other aspects in life as well. Slowly more females are back in school and most importantly they see a future.
