2011 9/11 Day of Service Highlights

More than 1 million Americans did acts of charitable serve in their communities, including thousands of AmeriCorps alumni.  Highlights of 9/11 Day from our AmeriCorps Alums chapters include:

Des Moines Chapter of AmeriCorps Alums
The Des Moines AmeriCorps Alums Chapter hosted the first annual September 11th Day of Service and Remembrance Community Walk, and engaged more than 250 veterans, active duty members, military families, emergency responders, and community members in a two-mile walk "in the shoes of a soldier” along a path lined with American flags, quotes, and statistics about September 11th.

North Texas Chapter of AmeriCorps Alums
The North Texas Chapter commemorated 9/11 Day by honoring the lives of those lost during a special opening ceremony that also honored our military veterans and currently serving members.  The service projects occurred on several sites throughout North Texas and included the likes of the Texas Trees Foundation, Habitat for Humanity, the Innercity Community Development Corporation (ICDC), the African American Museum and the City of Dallas.

St. Louis Chapter of AmeriCorps Alums
The St. Louis Chapter of AmeriCorps Alums, in partnership with United Way of Greater St. Louis, remembered and honored the events of September 11, 2011 by mobilizing over 250 volunteers to serve in East St. Louis, Illinois. The project partnered with the City of East St. Louis and local schools, churches, and community agencies to conduct a large-scale street clean up, distribute disaster preparedness information, and repair homes of seniors.

Utah Chapter of AmeriCorps Alums
The Utah Chapter of AmeriCorps Alums wrote hand written thank you notes to those currently deployed and also participated in a video tribute that was filmed on site during the service project.   Project volunteers also assembled 72-hour survival/disaster preparation kits that are being distributed to families of deployed soldiers.

Western New York Chapter of AmeriCorps Alums
The Western New York Chapter of AmeriCorps Alums, in partnership with The Service Collaborative of Western New York (TSCWNY), joined with the WNY Veterans Housing Coalition (WNYVHC) to serve those who have served our country. The WNYVHC is a staple in the Buffalo and WNY community; providing housing to veterans, especially those with special needs, the organization seeks to provide case management and program services to individuals who might otherwise face homelessness. This event also highlighted the legacy that forever honors the victims of 9/11 and the heroes who responded to the tragedy.

Other Chapters conducting 9/11 Day activities included:
Boston Chapter of AmeriCorps Alums
Connecticut Chapter of AmeriCorps Alums
Los Angeles Chapter of AmeriCorps Alums

History and Overview
2011 marked the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks that shocked and changed our great nation forever.  In the days and weeks that followed, the nation came together in an unprecedented spirit of community and commitment.   With the extraordinary efforts of the 9/11 community, Congress recently passed the "Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act” with overwhelming bi-partisan support and on April 21, 2009, President Barack Obama signed the act, establishing September 11th as an annual National Day of Service and Remembrance.

The 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance has now become a permanent positive tribute to all who were lost and all who rose in service; a time for citizens to work together in the spirit of unity that inspired Americans in the days after 9/11 to heal our communities and make them stronger through service.

9/11 Programmatic Initiatives & Goals
Points of Light Institute, in collaboration with HandsOn Network and MyGoodDeed.org, a leading voice in the 9/11 community’s service movement, is excited to partner with AmeriCorps Alums chapters across the country to organize service and remembrance projects that will engage and inspire thousands of individuals to serve, commit to serve on this day and beyond, and to create positive change by utilizing their voices and financial contributions to promote service in honor of 9/11.

The goals of this national and historic effort are to:
  • Inspire millions of American’s to re-engage in civic commitments;
  • Build 9/11 into a unprecedented  annual catalyst for ongoing citizen engagement;
  • Create a constructive legacy that forever honors the victims of 9/11 and the heroes who responded to the tragedy;
  • Promote cultural and interfaith understanding
