Career Corner: Applying My AmeriCorps Experience To My Role As An Executive Director
by Nakeisha Neal Jones, Executive Director at Public Allies DC

As an AmeriCorps member, I did not know that I was preparing to lead the organization where I served.   Yet there are many lessons learned from my year that impact me today.  A few of them are below.

1)  Use my strengths.  As a member, I was an academic instructor in a YouthBuild program for young adults who were my age or older.  I tried to imitate others, but I became effective when I incorporated my own strengths.  Today, I constantly assess how my strengths can best support Public Allies, admit mistakes and change course when necessary.

2)  Ideas are not enough.  The most challenging aspect from my year was a six month partnership between a community organization and eight members of my cohort.  Our team had lots of ideas. When our project fell through due to ineffective communication, we realized that ideas were not enough. I envision Public Allies Washington, DC, as a relevant, sustainable and recognized leadership pipeline for solving our region’s challenges.  Building systems and attracting resources are necessary to achieve this vision.

3)  Build community.  Members of my cohort supported me and told me the truth whether or not I asked.  Some are lifelong friends. The Executive Director role can be isolating.  There are some conversations that you can not have with your board or staff.  I make time to build a community of honest colleagues that support and challenge me.

Fifteen years and counting, I am still using lessons learned from my AmeriCorps year.

Nakeisha Neal is the Executive Director of Public Allies DC.  She served her AmeriCorps term with Public Allies in 1997
