IPSL Helps Prepare AmeriCorps Alum For Career Success

When I was preparing to graduate college in 2008 I was faced with a failing economy and little job experience. Unsure of what my next step should be, I decided to complete a year of National Service with AmeriCorps VISTA. That August I headed west from Vermont to Vermillion, South Dakota to serve as the Service-Learning Program Coordinator at the University of South Dakota. I worked with students, staff, and faculty promoting, organizing, and implanting service and civic engagement across the university. I had the most wonderful experience and before I knew it the year was coming to a close. I wanted to continue gaining experience in the higher education field, which had little to do with my majors in college, and decided to do a second year of service. I again headed west to Portland, OR to serve in a similar capacity with Concordia University.

My experience was again powerful and I knew I wanted to continue in the field of higher education and nonprofit management. To pursue this passion I knew I needed some additional training. I began researching graduate schools and was excited to discover IPSL. IPSL’s Master’s Degree was one of the few master’s programs in the country that combined my top three interests of higher education, nonprofit management, and international development.

Ask The Career Coach: Relocating For An Out-of-State Job

Question:  What is the best way to land a position in another state?  How do I market myself and my AmeriCorps experience in other geographic areas than where I served?  And how can I afford the move?

Imagine you’re hiking on a trail which ends at a river bank.   The other side of the river is calling out to you as that is where you want to go!  How do you get across?

First, assess the situation.  Second, prep your gear.  Third, tap into your resources.  And finally, move forward onto that first steppingstone.  Landing a position in another geographic area requires the same thought and preparation to successfully navigate to a new destination!

Moving to a new city and finding the right job at the right organization is a lot to pack up into a figurative U-haul so think about steppingstones.  Since the average job search can take 3-12 months, a short and long term strategy is critical.   You might take a short term job in your current city while prepping and saving for the move.  You can take a leap of faith and take a temp job in a new place.  You could accept a good position with a decent organization that will give you a foothold in the new town.   It’s all about what’s right for where you are in your life, career and risk tolerance.

Career Corner: Alum Taps AmeriCorps Skills To Avert Organizational Financial Crisis

Running to End Domestic Violence. That’s what I did for six months. I live in San Francisco and I work for the anti-domestic violence nonprofit

W.O.M.A.N. Inc. – Women Organized to Make Abuse Nonexistent. Last year, our agency went through a financial emergency.

Our programs and services, such as our 24-hour crisis line and case management services were strong, but our funding streams were lacking. A year later, I am happy to report that W.O.M.A.N. Inc pulled through this crisis and the agency is now in a fiscally sound position. In fact, W.O.M.A.N. Inc is in an even stronger financial position than prior to the crisis.
