Sept. 2012 Issue

Do you remember the first time you served AFTER graduating from AmeriCorps? For me, 9/11 Day is a solemn reminder of my first service as an AmeriCorps Alum – it was at Ground Zero, just one week after the disaster in 2001.
My friend and fellow NCCC Alum, Olive Eckstein, was the reason I went to NYC to serve, but the reason I was ABLE to serve, was due to the skills and certifications I had acquired through AmeriCorps. Just steps from the chaos and destruction of Ground Zero, Olive and I came equipped with a number of Red Cross disaster relief certifications and we were quickly plugged into the operations of a 24 hour respite shelter for first responders.
Each of you posesses unique and valuable talents and skills which you acquired and developed in service through AmeriCorps. This month’s ONE THING: Volunteer. You can do that through joining your local Alums Chapter and serve regularly with Alums like yourself. In addition, Hands On Network, an enterprise of Points of Light, is the largest network of 250 volunteer action centers that extend to 16 countries around the world. These centers help people find and engage in volunteer opportunities in their local communities. No matter how big or small your next service project is, I encourage you to continue to find ways to serve in your city.
Our pledge of a Lifetime of Service knows no beginning or end, so whether you’ve just finished your AmeriCorps year or you were a graduate from Class One, there’s no better time than right now to find a new way to serve your community.
In Service,
Ben Duda
Executive Director of AmeriCorps Alums

9/11 Day of Service & Remembrance
This year marked the 11th anniversary of the September 11th attacks and AmeriCorps Alums would like to honor and remember those who were lost in the attacks and recovery of one of the most defining tragedies of our generation. In the aftermath of this tragedy, we saw Americans come together and rise in unity to serve our country in patriotism. Since then, thousands of Alums continue to answer the call to serve and get things done on 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance.

September is also National Disaster Preparedness Month and it's time to pledge to get Good & Ready! Join Points of Light,, the American Red Cross and the Federal Alliance for Safe Homes in preparing your local communities to recover from disasters.

Alums in the News

AmeriCorps Alums were all over the news this month! From having the first ever AmeriCorps Alum on the CNCS Board to a Teach for America Alum being recognized (and surprised) on the Ellen Show, it's easy to have missed where Alums were being recognized for their service. Here are our favorite Alums headlines from the past month:

FEMA Corps

On September 13th, 2012 the inaugural class of 240 FEMA Corps members was sworn into AmeriCorps service at their induction ceremony at the AmeriCorps NCCC Southern Region Campus in Vicksburg, Mississippi.

The partnership between the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) established this new unit of AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps to focus on disaster response and recovery capacity while creating new career opportunities for Millennials.
