During the month-long run of the AmeriCorps Alums and Save Service "I Serve Because…” video contest, alumni shared incredible stories of service and how they were "Made in AmeriCorps." Over 50 videos were generated by the Alums chapter network and the significant response from the alumni community truly showcases what it means to live out a Lifetime of Service. I am pleased to announce the two winners with the most votes in the contest:
Congratulations to Erica Gordon, an AmeriCorps Alum who served with College Forward in Austin, TX, on submitting the most liked video and winning the "I Serve Because…” Video Contest. Thank you Erica for inspiring us with your story of leaving software consulting to make a difference through service and supporting first-generation college students! Erica received a brand new laptop, courtesy of AmeriCorps Alums.
Also, congratulations to runners up, the Midcoast Maine Chapter of AmeriCorps Alums for their compilation video featuring multiple local Alums. Inspirational messages like this one were shared throughout the submission:
"We serve because this crazy world we live in needs more people trying to make our world a better place, because we want to do good work and we want to get things done.”
Chapter President Gordon Liu will be joining AmeriCorps Alums at this year’s Conference on Volunteering & Service in Washington DC.
On behalf of everyone at Save Service, Voices for National Service, and Service Nation, I would like to extend a special thank you to our finalists and all participants for sharing their stories with us. Whether you submitted a video or simply voted for your favorites, you helped to spread the powerful story about the impact of national service on countless lives in communities across the country. Please continue to upload and share your story today!

Disaster Relief Efforts for Moore, OK
On May 20, 2013, a deadly EF-5 tornado touched down on the community of Moore, Oklahoma. In the wake of this recent disaster, Alums have been looking for ways to help the Moore community. Points of Light is working directly with HandsOn Network affiliate, the United Way of Central Oklahoma, who is leading the local volunteer response with many local and national partners to the devastating tornadoes that swept through Oklahoma this week. To serve in the disaster relief, register your interest here to volunteer. If you are not able to volunteer, please donate to the volunteer relief effort.
The immediate needs of the survivors are being met through local emergency management, the American Red Cross and many VOAD agencies. Alums - please do NOT self-deploy to disaster sites. Meaningful volunteer opportunities to assist the survivors help rebuild their community are being diligently identified. Thanks for your patience and desire to continue to serve!
