Share Your Moment

When we shared our Annual report last Thursday, we reference that certain “special moment from our AmeriCorps year that sticks with us…[t]hat sense of service, the sense of something bigger that unites us.” An AmeriCorps moment can be humbling, rewarding, trying or inspiring. It can be your lowest moment or when the lightbulb went off. For each alum, their moment is different but it sticks with us.

For Co-Executive Director Mary Bruce, her moment was on the way to her 4th grade classroom, as a Corps Member in Columbia HeIghts DC in 1999 – read more of Mary’s story on our blog. For Marchelli Hill, it was watching the positive progression of youth she works with- read more of Marchelli' story here. For AmeriCorps Alums Co-Executive Director Ben Duda it was finishing a Habitat home in time for Christmas, as part of his NCCC year.

What was your AmeriCorps moment? How’s it influenced where you’ve gone and who you’ve become? Share your AmeriCorps moment with us on Facebook or consider writing a guest post on our blog.

In Service,

Mary and Ben

Join Us for #AlumsNow on Twitter

Every first Friday of the month, AMERICORPS ALUMS convenes a twitter chat that engages Alums just like you on topics that matter.  Last Friday, we kicked off March by hosting a chat on "Women in the Workplace."  We were excited to be joined by two Alums, Kristen Ginger from Women Employed and Ashley Allison from Enroll America.

Our next chat will be on April 4, 2014 from 1PM to 2PM Eastern, and you can participate by using the hashtag #AlumsNow. If you have ideas for topics or want to participate, please share your questions or follow us on Twitter.

Free Tax Return Tool Grows in Popularity

So far in 2014, over 1,200 of you have registered to take advantage of our yearly free tax return benefit. As you may have heard, each year AMERICORPS ALUMS partners with MyFreeTaxes.com to offer free federal and state tax return filings to Alums and current members. Last year, Alums and members received over $1.36 million in federal and state tax refunds. We are on track to outpace last year's results, and want to keep up that momentum. Please share this opportunity on Facebook or Twitter with any AmeriCorps Alums and/or AmeriCorps members you know. In order to qualify for this offer, individuals or families must have 2013 household income under $58,000. To file your own free tax returns, please click

AMERICORPS ALUMS 2013 Annual Report

In case you missed it, last week AMERICORPS ALUMS released our first ever annual report. If you haven't had a chance yet, we encourage you to read it and share it with your own national service contacts. We hope you’ll join us in celebrating this service and the collective impact of our alumni network. We’ve shared some of our best stories from 2013 and our plans for the years to come in our first-ever annual report. In this report, we provide profiles of individual alums, highlight activities from our chapters, and share ways to get involved with the AmeriCorps 20th anniversary celebration. We welcome any comments and feedback you have about the annual report (what you liked, where we could have done better, and what was missing.) Please share any feedback directly with Mary Bruce at mary@americorpsalums.org.

Why A Healthier Future For Our Next Generation Matters
by Amanda Green (AmeriCorps '01)

here. The headline, “Help Others Get Ahead” drew me to a job posting on Monster.com. This was in 2000 after I had graduated from Florida State University and was looking for my first “real” job. I realized then that helping others get ahead was the course for my career. My service in AmeriCorps NCCC started that journey, and since 2009, I have worked for the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, a national nonprofit dedicated to reducing the prevalence of childhood obesity. I lead 10 professionals working to transform schools across the country as part of the Alliance for a Healthier Generation’s Healthy Schools Program. Together with teachers, students, school staff, families and community members, we are collaborating to make changes to create healthier school environments based on evidence-based national best practices in school health. We strive to give children an opportunity to live healthier lives. As an AmeriCorps*NCCC member, I pledged “to make our people safer, smarter and healthier,” and my work with the Alliance for a Healthier Generation is enabling me to fulfill this promise. I’m proud to be an AmeriCorps Alum and to know my work is in line with the AmeriCorps pledge, as well as the Corporation for National and Community Service’s focus on Healthy Futures.
