Four Simple Ways To Help Eliminate Ed Award Tax
AmeriCorps Alums has been successful in introducing House of Representatives' legislation to eliminate taxation on the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award (H.R. 6407).  The possibility that the effort would have to extend beyond the current Congressional term (110th Congress) was always on the table, and it seems likely that AmeriCorps Alums will call on our alumni base to help ignite this process early in the 111th Congress.  The efforts of alumni like yourself helped secure 28 co-sponsors for HR 6407, which is an excellent start to the effort.  For those of you who are unfamiliar with the term "co-sponsor," it simply means that a member of Congress (House of Representatives or Senate) pledges his/her support of  a specific piece of legislation by attaching his/her name to that bill as a "co-sponsor" just after the bill is officially announced as new legislation.  If you are still interested in helping out during this Congressional term, we encourage you to do so by following the four simple steps below.  Bringing H.R. 6407 to your Congressperson's attention will help to familiarize the issue for them before it is reintroduced next year.

  1. Call Your Congressman And Urge Him/Her To Co-sponsor HR 6407*
Calling your Congressman to ask him/her to co-sponsor HR 6407 is easy and very effective.  Even though you will not speak directly to your Congressman, each call is logged and noted.  Please ask for the person in charge of "national service" when calling.  Click here for talking points.

  2. Fax A Handwritten Note To Your Congressman Asking Him/Her to Co-sponsor HR 6407*
If you prefer another option, faxing in a handwritten note about the value of  HR 6407 is another great way to garner the support of your Congressman.  The letter can be short and sweet, but should be handwritten. Click here for examples, and for added impact, please add this Dear Colleague letter as part of your fax.

  3. Meet With Your Local Congressional Office About HR 6407*
If you cannot travel to Washington DC to meet with your Congressman about HR 6407, meeting with your District office to seek co-sponsorship of  HR 6407 is the next best thing.  Congressional District offices report directly to the Congressman, and meeting with reps from these offices will help to create co-sponsorship for HR 6407.  Click here for more info.  Also see action item # 4.
