Dinner For Darfur
by Amanda Wawro, ABLE Member

Bishop Timon – St. Jude High School helped bring awareness to the over 400,000 people who have been vic-timized by the crisis situation in Dar-fur. Working with Global Studies teacher Mr. Tom Joyce and Campus Minister Mrs. Suzanne Overdorf, AmeriCorps was able to help organ-ize and host the Second Annual Din-ner For Darfur to raise over $1,100 for Genocide Intervention Network on Wednesday May 21, 2008

Guest Speaker Father James F. Joyce,S.J.—Canonical Administra-tor and Acting Principal of the St. Monica and St. Augustine Scholars Programs—spoke about the many injustices brought upon the people of Darfur and our responsibility as a community to help in any way we are able. Father Joyce has always been a steady influence on the African American, Latino and African refugee students in Buffalo, working as an advocate for education and safety for students here and abroad.

Students at BTSJ made and displayed posters at the school urg-ing an end to the violence and starvation.

in Darfur and to ―Stand Up and Speak Out‖ for African civilians who are not able to do so alone. Invita-tions were sent to numerous local agencies leading to a substantial turn out at the dinner.

Thursday May 19th, the week before the Dinner For Darfur, BTSJ students and teachers joined local schools and organizations including Buffalo For Africa at a Peace Rally at Niagara Square. After showing support and listening to speakers such as Fidele Diing Dhan from the Reach-ing out to Africa Project, and the sup-portive family of Buffalo native John Granville—Aid worker shot and killed along with his driver in Sudan—students were ready to bring their collective knowledge and awareness back to Bishop Timon – St. Jude and the South Buffalo community.

Mr. [Tom] Joyce poignantly closed BTSJ's Dinner for Darfur by quoting Robert Kennedy ―[e]ach time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope... and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and dar-ing those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.‖

Many thanks to the WNY AmeriCorps members and leaders whose help and attendance made the Bishop Timon – St. Jude High School Second Annual Dinner for Darfur such a success!
