As you probably know, the 2nd Annual National AmeriCorps Week is May 11-18, 2008. The City of Miami was selected to host the 2008 AmeriCorps Week closing events on May 17th and 18th More than 1,000 AmeriCorps and AmeriCorps*VISTA members and alumni nationwide are expected to attend.

A highlight of the weekend’s closing events is  a Sunday service project at Virginia Key Beach Park.  Dedicated on August 1, 1945, Virginia Key was the only “blacks only” beach in the south during segregation.  After being closed for 25 years, the Park recently underwent extensive renovations and reopened to  the public in February 2008.  This 82 acre property located on beautiful Biscayne Bay has a partially restored hardwood hammock, a mile of beachfront, and newly renovated concessionary buildings, including a children’s train. To help further beautify this historic park, we will be planting more than 1,000 native plants on a 15 acre restoration site in just one hour, and we need your help.  This is a huge undertaking that will require skilled leadership in order to accomplish our goal.  You and your team are invited to become team leaders and represent Miami-Dade AmeriCorps excellence.  We are specifically looking for energetic and motivated individuals who have a flair for leading others.

The 15 acre project site will be divided into smaller plots.  Team leaders will de assigned one plot, and leaders will guide a group of around 20 volunteers who will be planting on their designated plot of land.  Team leaders are required to attend a site orientation and pre-service project on May 10, 2008, a week before the large service project.  You will meet fellow AmeriCorps leaders, be trained on the site and the project, and be part of a media preview.  Though the details of the day are still being confirmed, team leaders will most likely ride on the buses with their teams to the project site and guide their team in on-site orientation and planting.

We hope you will join us as a leader for this event.  The deadline to register as a team leader is April 18th. Please contact Becky at or 305.646.7255 for more information and to commit your team as leaders.  We look forward to seeing you in May!
