Tell Your Service Story and Inspire Your Community to Action
Please join us for “Stories of Service,” a public celebration of the impact and scope of AmeriCorps in Michigan.  AmeriCorps alumni will share brief stories about the ways that their service shaped them and the communities in which they served.  This interactive event will inspire everyday people to imagine a city/country/world in which their wish for the future is a reality.  Local residents will be invited to share and record their wishes for the future, and begin a conversation about how service can help bring their vision to life.
Saturday, September 27th, 2008
Arts & Scraps Warehouse
16135 Harper Avenue
Detroit, MI  48224
How it works:  AmeriCorps alumni will meet at the warehouse at 9 AM to participate in a fun and impactful service project.  We'll be assembling educational "creativity kits" for children using recycled materials, to support the important work of Arts & Scraps.  At 10 AM, 11 AM and Noon, a few alumni will share a brief (1 to 3 minute) story about service, and encourage the rest of the volunteers to informally discuss the role that service plays in their lives.  After the service project ends at noon, teams of AmeriCorps alumni will continue to share their stories with the public and collect signatures for the Declaration of Service.
What's a "Story of Service"?:  Every AmeriCorps alumnus has one (or several).  It's the one about the student you tutored who suddenly made a huge breakthrough.  Or the senior citizen who saved hundreds of dollars in heating costs becuase you helped winterize their home.  Or the unexpected way that service led you to explore a new career path.  Or the inspiring people you met along the way.  Or the neighborhood kids who spontaneously joined your team's service project one day.  Or the crazy skills that you added to your resume as a result of your AmeriCorps experience.
The point is, service has impact --- in thousands of big and small ways.  When we share our stories, we build community and celebrate the power of ordinary citizens to make a difference.
What if I'm too nervous to speak in front of a group?:  Join us at the Day of Action anyway.  It's going to be a fun day of service, and we won't ask you to speak if it makes you uncomfortable.  You're a valuable member of the AmeriCorps Alums family in Metro Detroit, and we'll be honored to have you with us.
Can I bring my friends and family?:  Absolutely!  Service includes everyone.  Just let us know how many people will be volunteering with you by telling us the number of "guests" when you register.
What does Arts & Scraps do?:  All kinds of amazing stuff to encourage creativity in kids and recycling by local businesses.  Check this out:
