The Atlanta Chapter of AmeriCorps Alums is partnering with two local organizations to bring artistic integration to MLK Day activities to Atlanta, GA. Our chapter will partner with the East Atlanta Kids Club and the MLK, Jr. King Center to conduct the Seats for Change Project. Alums from the Atlanta Chapter will buddy-up with youth from the East Atlanta Kids Club to produce bus seat collages that symbolize the change realized by the election of Barack Obama to the U.S. Presidency. The seats will combine images of Dr. Martin Luther King (and other images from the Civil Rights movement) and Barack Obama (and his Presidential campaign). The finished product will serve as a lasting memory of the struggle and sacrifices of the Civil Rights movement and the ultimate fruit it bore with the election of Barack Obama.
The East Atlanta Kids Club primarily engages under-resourced African-American youth from East Atlanta, and exposes them to educational, recreational, and cultural opportunities otherwise not available. Again, East Atlanta Kids Club Children will partner with alumni to make the seats. Family members of children who participate in the East Atlanta Kids Club will also be invited to attend the event.
