This weekend, in honor of the 2009 MLK Day of Service and with generous funding from the national Points of Light Institute, College Forward has pledged to mobilize hundreds of volunteers in the Austin area to improve our local community.

But we can't do it without YOU!

We're looking for 500 volunteers this Saturday to make this initiative a success -- please consider dedicating a few hours this weekend toward this tremendous new effort to promote hope, equality, and service in our nation.

Can you help? Do you know someone else who can? Sign up today at or by clicking here. To see footage of our last year's MLK Day project on our YouTube channel!

WHAT: College Forward's environmental "MLK Day Community Enrichment Project"
Saturday, January 17, 2009
9:00am-3:00pm (but shifts are flexible)
WHERE: Kick-off the day with our friends at Hands On Central TX at Huston-Tillotson University, 900 Chicon St., at the Davage-Durden Union Building. Then at 11am, volunteers will board buses or proceed on their own to one of four convenient park cleanup project locations:

  • East Austin -- Roy G. Guerrero-Colorado River Park @ 517 S. Pleasant Valley
  • Central -- Shoal Creek Greenbelt @ Gaston Ave. between 29th and 24th
  • North -- Copperfield Nature Trails @ 1450 Yager Ln. E, Pflugerville, TX
  • Far South -- Hays County Area Food Bank @ 801 W. Martin Luther King Dr., San Marcos, TX
Dr. King taught us to live a life of nonviolence and service. As he once said:

"If you want to be important -- wonderful. If you want to be recognized -- wonderful. If you want to be great -- wonderful. But, recognize that he who is greatest among you shall be your servant. That's a new definition of greatness."

Come serve with our staff, students, and AmeriCorps members this weekend! You won't regret it.

Lunch provided. Bring a water bottle and be ready to roll up your sleeves and get dirty!
