The Georgia Chapter of AmeriCorps Alums, in conjunction with the Georgia Commission on Service and Volunteerism, is participating in MLK, Jr. Day of Service activities across the state of Georgia.  Throughout six pre-determined regions in Georgia, AmeriCorps alumni will gather at senior citizen centers to help spread the Seat for Social Justice project across the state of Georgia.

A Seat For Social Justice serves a strong symbolic reminder of the challenges many U.S. citizens have faced in the fight for civil rights.  Alumni will work together with current members and seniors to create a seat (see below for an example) that will serve as the signature MLK Day activity for the The Senior Citizen Center of La Grange.  We will also participate in a project that chronicles the thoughts and comments of seniors on the state of The Civil Rights Movement as it stood in the 60’s as compared to how it stands now.  These stories will then be highlighted in a civil rights project created by AmeriCorps Alums.  Other projects and activities include: landscaping and trail building/maintenance of center's nature trails, pool tournament, bingo and crafts, trivia, and fish fry
As of 1/3/2007 the project is currently seeking donations of plants and other items to spruce up the outdoor area; please let us know if you can help with this.  If you would like to assist with this request, please contact either of the event coordinators at the e-mail addresses noted above.
Other: Please bring your own lunch or money to grab something.
