Explore People-Centered Education & Engagement at SIT

Today’s article is a sponsored interview by SIT Graduate Institute which offers a $5,500 tuition match of the Segal Ed award to AmeriCorps alums. Caitlyn Clark, a City Year AmeriCorps alum and current SIT student in her second year of the MA in Sustainable Development program shares:

“My experience in City Year taught me how to be an engaged citizen, to embed myself in the community in which I live and work. Through this I learned to seek out my neighbors, be informed about local politics, and network with local organizations and community groups. City Year utilizes the experiential learning model to make the most of your time working in diverse teams, appreciating both the individual’s life experiences and the collective knowledge of the group. At SIT, this starts from Day 1 in your Foundations course. There were many similarities to my City Year experience: teambuilding activities; discussions around race, class, gender, and privilege; space provided for both community building and self-reflection. As with all experiential learning, there were moments of humor, frustration, confusion, intimacy, vulnerability, and ultimately growth. Read more

Virginia Is the First State to Join Employers of National Service

A few days ago when the City of Philadelphia joined Employers of National Service and became the first to award civil service points to national service alums, we thought the news couldn’t get any better. Then, Virginia became the first state to join the initiative this week and changed its jobs homepage to include a call for applications from AmeriCorps and Peace Corps Alums. Governor McAuliffe shared, “AmeriCorps and Peace Corps alumni have skills, dedication, a can-do attitude, and a commitment to the greater good – and we want more of them to join our team.” What would happen if your state had more alums on staff? Click here to tweet the good news and challenge your state to follow Virginia’s lead and join Employers of National Service.

Think Big. Dig Deep. Make Change.

National leadership award winner and AmeriCorps alum, Mona Mowafi, reflects on her path to global entrepreneurism in our latest National Leaders Spotlight blog. “Many of us stumble upon the world of social entrepreneurship, rarely having planned for it,” says Mona. “Indeed, if you asked me if I were a social entrepreneur ten years ago, I probably would have shook my head in wonder at the inquiry. I’ve come to believe that social entrepreneurship is less a ‘field,’ and more a title to characterize a group of dreamers and relentless doers across a variety sectors. The titles don’t matter—if you find yourself a person who thinks big about the possibilities for systemic and sustainable change and feels the passion and urge to pursue those big ideas relentlessly, go for it. Join the amazing group of change makers doing exactly that in the world.” Read more
