August 2012 Issue

It was truly a memorable day in Washington on August 17, 2012, and I am so glad you were able to join us whether online or in-person for AmeriCorps Alums Day at the White House. We were lucky to be joined by inspirational voices like Jack Lew, Jon Carson and Jonathan Greenblatt, have intimate conversations with agency leads on policy issues that matter, convene panels highlighting 12 AmeriCorps Alums Champions for Change, and of course, witness on full display the indomitable spirit and leadership of Wendy Spencer, CEO of the Corporation for National & Community Service. You can watch the entire day’s recordings here.
Thank you for being involved and sharing your story on AmeriCorps Alums Day at the White House and more importantly continuing to wave your flag as proud AmeriCorps Alums. So, what’s next? I want to introduce a new newsletter feature called "ONE THING"; every month, I’ll have one suggested action you can take to continue supporting AmeriCorps Alums in building a movement of national service alumni.
August's ONE THING is Join the AmeriCorps Alums LinkedIn Group. As we learned from the stories shared during AmeriCorps Alums Day, alumni have continued to leverage their service to be leaders in careers. If you haven’t already, start your professional network and connect with your fellow Alums professionally. Our LinkedIn group is a great place to see where your service can take you in your career after AmeriCorps and start networking with Alums in your city and field.
AmeriCorps Alums Day at the White House was an incredible moment for all of us, and gives me high hopes for the future of national service AND for the 21st century leaders that will harness their AmeriCorps experience across all sectors for good.
In Service,
Ben Duda, Executive Director of AmeriCorps Alums

AmeriCorps Alums Day at The White House
On Friday, August 17th, 2012, AmeriCorps Alums, in collaboration with the White House Office of Public Engagement and the Corporation for National and Community Service, hosted a special convening of AmeriCorps alumni known as AmeriCorps Alums Day at the White House.

National Advisory Council
We’re proud to introduce the AmeriCorps Alums National Advisory Council – an advisory group made up entirely of AmeriCorps alumni that will help direct and support the mission of AmeriCorps Alums. Members of the Advisory Council bring their national service experience and professional experience in private and non profit sectors to advance the mission of AmeriCorps Alums nationally.
The council, chaired by Mary Bruce, will work closely with our Executive Director to enhance the alumni experience of the registered members of the AmeriCorps Alums network. Mary is an AmeriCorps Alum and Returned Peace Corps Volunteer, former co-lead of the Boston Chapter of AmeriCorps Alums and currently works on education policy for Civic Enterprises.
Meet the members of the National Advisory Council here.

National Chapter Leadership
AmeriCorps Alums chapters are led by a dedicated group of volunteer alumni whose passion for service, volunteering, and improving their communities is exemplary. They represent the diversity in AmeriCorps service and bring their skills learned in AmeriCorps to serve their local communities.
See the full list of chapters and their leadership here.
Please contact Greg Heinrich with any questions pertaining to Alums chapters. Become a chapter leader by filling out the application here.
