January 2013 Issue
Annually, Martin Luther King Day is a national holiday where the service community comes together to celebrate Dr. King’s legacy with "A Day On, Not a Day Off” through service to others. What is amazing is that over the years, the holiday has become a powerful moment in our country, especially for alumni of AmeriCorps. It's an opportunity to reflect on our formative experience as AmeriCorps members and how we recognized Dr. King’s legacy in service.
In 2000, I had my first MLK Day service experience while in AmeriCorps*NCCC. I was co-leading a 200 person volunteer day at what was then the 2nd largest homeless shelter in the country (and ironically, and unfortunately, located across the street from the US Department of Labor). Seeing AmeriCorps members, CNCS staff, local nonprofit leaders, University students, and residents of the shelter volunteering side-by-side, while accomplishing so much in service was truly inspirational.
Though early on in my AmeriCorps term, that moment really embodied the power of national service for me, and demonstrated what can be accomplished when we work together. This could not have been better captured than through the quote on my t-shirt, "Everyone can be great because everyone can serve."
AmeriCorps Alums recognizes the leadership and local impact of chapters and individual alumni during MLK Day in 2013, as a reminder of the promise we each made with the AmeriCorps pledge. Our commitment to a lifetime of service is lived out each year in celebrating Dr. King’s legacy of service on the Martin Luther King Day holiday. Please share your story of service, both as a member and in 2013, here.
In Service,

Ben Duda
