Give Thanks, Give Time, Give a Hoot—Just Give!

Dear Alum,

For a year, we gave a hand, an ear, or a chance to someone who needed it. Putting service before self isn’t only what we do—it’s who we are. In the past few months, we’ve asked you to share your stories, pledge to serve, support professional development, follow us on social media and more. And thousands of you answered the call! So THANK YOU for your service and supporting a lifetime of service with us.

The heart of the AmeriCorps Alums movement is giving. Whether you’re pocketing a piece of trash on the sidewalk or organizing a food drive, we know alums are contributing in small (and large!) ways every day. And we want to give back with you. That’s why we’re partnering with #GivingTuesday, a global social movement that celebrates a day of giving back. After Black Friday and Cyber Monday, celebrate #GivingTuesday on December 2 and all this month.

We’ve created an “Alums Give Back” page on our website with ways to give from now until #GivingTuesday. Give an Ameri-gift, a shout-out to Alums, a day of volunteering, and more! Just give. When you give with the AmeriCorps Alums network, you help build a bigger, bolder alumni community. Join us today, and show Alums give a hoot for America—and each other—it’s part of our lifetime of serving!

In Service,

Ben Duda and Mary Bruce
AmeriCorps Alums Co-Executive Directors

Alums Give a Year and Give Again

Did you serve a year and then keep serving in AmeriCorps, the military, or as a volunteer? During Veterans Day week, we featured three alums and veterans who believe we’re all wired for service! Major Rebecca Lange shares that “eyes closed and acronyms masked,” military and civil service members are far more similar than we think. Veteran Kevin C. Miller shares how AmeriCorps VISTA gave him a home and a chance to again serve a mission greater than himself. He’s still fighting veteran homelessness at the same nonprofit where he served as a VISTA. When veterans come home and AmeriCorps members graduate, our mission continues. Alum and German Army veteran Birte Keays shares her commitment to supporting veterans with the nonprofit The Mission Continues. Give thanks to these AmeriCorps alums who serve even when no one’s counting the hours. Share and write a note of thanks on their blogs here.

Give Advice and Knowledge

With hundreds of news outlets, thousands of self-help gurus, and countless new talk show hosts popping up each year, it’s easy to find advice and news.
It’s much harder to find good advice and news you care about. Which is why we launched our AmeriCorps Alums Founders Blog series with guest blogs from leaders who helped create AmeriCorps. This month, co-author of the AmeriCorps pledge, Brad Meltzer shares reflections in "When I Was 24." Find out how Brad went from receiving 24 rejection letters to becoming a best-selling thriller writer, host of Lost History on H2, and a national service champion. All alums, no matter how humble their beginnings, become experts in something. Give your advice, wisdom, and inspiration with us by guest blogging or emailing us to speak in a professional development webinar.

Give Time

How long does it take to make a difference in your community? Sometimes, it only takes a really good day. AmeriCorps Alums across our network volunteered for Make a Difference Day. Read how alums in Connecticut came together for some scary, good service on Make a Difference Day for Boo Bash Bridgeport. Looking for a way to give your time and volunteer? Find a project here!
