On September 26, 2006 Democratice representatives William Clay (MO) and Major Owens (NY) proposed the National Infrastructure Corps Act of 2006. This bill would transform AmeriCorps volunteers in their twenties into employees. The AmeriCorps members would help complete major projects such as Gulf Coast rebuilding projects, lock-and-dam replacement projects on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. This bill would increase funding up to $900 million annually over a four year period as well as create up to 40,000 well-paid jobs that focus on infrastructure public works (i.e. roads, highways, mass transit, etc.).
