In a speech that recalled John F. Kennedy and the creation of the Peace Corps, Sen. Barack Obama called students to national service in a speech at the Small Multi-Sport Center in his most recent major policy speech in front of over 1,000 students and community members.
Joined by one of the founders of the Peace Corps, former Pennsylvania Senator Harry Wofford – who was introduced by Professor of political science Craig Allin – Obama outlined an expansion of national service broad in scope and heavy in idealism.

In front of an audience packed with Cornellians, Obama called for an increase in Peace Corps volunteers from 7,800 per year to 16,000 by 2011, helping veterans to find job placements for other veterans, an expansion of AmeriCorps, and an online directory of service opportunities aimed at increasing service among youth.  View the event here
