March 2012 Issue

It truly was an incredible AmeriCorps Week 2012 – as chapters in 20 cities held leadership summits, alumni panels, service projects, advocacy strategy sessions, and local networking events. We also hosted an online townhall– profiling career paths of four Alums in social media consulting, education reform, fundraising and program management. They were a super inspiring group of diverse leaders who shared they learned determination, flexibility, communication skills, perseverance, and the value of team in AmeriCorps AND have found those skills to be most useful in the workplace.

This spring there will be more opportunities to share your AmeriCorps story – one of which is District Day May 1-3 (so please mark your calendars!) I encourage each of you to take the spirit of AmeriCorps Week and carry it forward by showing others how AmeriCorps Works in your lives. Tell a friend, write a blog post, call your representatives; do what you can to let your story be heard because your AmeriCorps experience has made a difference, and is integral to our country’s future. The more light that is shined on our AmeriCorps stories, the more others can see how bright the benefits of service are on our communities.

FEMA Corps

On March 13th of AmeriCorps Week, we were thrilled to learn of a new partnership between the Corporation for National & Community Service and the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to create an AmeriCorps*NCCC corps devoted to disaster preparedness, response, and recovery. The new FEMA Corps is a 1,600 corps member addition to the AmeriCorps*NCCC operations.

As described by Tiffany Zapico, member of NCCC Advisory Board, AmeriCorps*NCCC Alumni Leadership Council Chair, and NYC Alums Chapter Leadership Team:

"The partnership with FEMA and AmeriCorps NCCC will not only strengthen our nation's culture of national service but will also benefit disaster survivors, communities, and taxpayers. Within 18 months this initiative will double the number of participants that can serve with NCCC, adding 1600 members per year. At a time where 1 million AmeriCorps applicants have been turned away in the past two years, it's exciting to see an innovative way to create opportunities for more people to serve. Alums should definitely consider applying as the program in actively looking for Team Leaders and Corps Members."

Recent natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina and the Joplin tornados, illustrated what an essential, collaborative role AmeriCorps members can play in the immediate aftermath and on-the-ground response.

The first FEMA Corps class will start their 10 month term in August 2012. If you would like to apply or know others who are looking to serve, we encourage you to serve as part of the first FEMA Corps class! Find out more details and apply here.
