Dear AmeriCorps Alum,

We promised 2014 would mean a “bigger and bolder” AmeriCorps Alums – and we meant it!  We are dedicated to getting things done FOR AmeriCorps alumni – so that YOU can keep getting things done for America – and we are.

For example, Germain Castellanos (pictured right), AmeriCorps alumni, was honored as a White House “Champion of Change”  in honor of Cesar Chavez. Then, alums across the country, including Mayor Whalling of Flint, MI and Mayor Fetterman of Braddock, PA joined more than 1,750 U.S.mayors in celebrating service in the second annual Mayor's Day of Recognition. Jakita Allen, New Orleans Chapter leader and AmeriCorps NCCC alum was awarded the Joseph Massenburg Memorial Award for Excellence in National Service by Mayor Mitch Landrieu.

We know you’re getting things done – and we want to support you in that work.  So, please, read on to learn more about how Alums are getting things done, and ways to get involved.  We’d also encourage you to take our online "Life After AmeriCorps" survey of Alums so that we can better understand  how to support the nearly 1 million AmeriCorps alumni nationwide.  We’ll also share the results with our champions –  including funders and government officials – to make the case that an investment in YOU is an investment we should make.

In service,

Mary and Ben

AMERICORPS ALUMS Plays Key Role in Launch of

On March 26, 2014 AMERICORPS ALUMS joined with Service Nation and 17 of the country’s leading national service organizations in an effort to engage Hollywood to tell our stories of service. AMERICORPS ALUMS serves as the National Strategic Partner for this campaign, highlighting the power of national service to be a cross-cutting solution for our country’s most pressing problems by uniting Americans in common purpose.  Our goal is simple, but ambitious: We envision a day when young Americans turn to each other and ask, “Where will your year of national service be?”

NOLA Chapter Leader Honored With First Ever Joseph Massenburg Memorial Award for Excellence in National Service

Last April 1, the AmeriCorps community grieved after the news of the tragic death of AmeriCorps NCCC Member Joseph Massenburg.   Massenburg was serving in NCCC, and his Delta 4 team had recently started their first project for Green Light New Orleans.  Exactly one year later, New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu awarded the first-ever Joseph Massenburg Memorial Award for Excellence in National Service to  Jakita Allen,  New Orleans Chapter leader and AmeriCorps NCCC Alum.

"Joseph was killed right before I moved here last May," Allen said. " I was in NCCC, and there were three members that age. He lived where my brother lives now. Getting this award is special, but it's also something I am going to carry with me in my service."

"We are using this moment to honor a very promising young man who came to us from Chicago who unfortunately was taken from us too soon.  His memory will carry on as individuals, inspired by his example, follow in his footsteps and work together to change our community for the best, one day at a time," Mayor Landrieu said.

AMERICORPS ALUMS salutes Jakita  for her continued commitment to service, and the city of New Orleans for establishing a fitting honor in memory of Joseph Massenburg.

Chapter Spotlight: North Texas Mayor Day of Recognition
This post originally appeared on the North Texas Chapter of AmeriCorps Alums blog on April 3, 2014

Alums Chapters used Mayor’s Day as an opportunity to support AmeriCorps programs  in their cities, as well as connect with local leadership.  One great example of this is from our North Texas chapter:

AmeriCorps Alums of North Texas celebrated the 2nd annual Mayors Day with partner programs in the North Texas AmeriCorps Alliance, by engaging leaders like Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings and Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price who highlighted the impact of citizen service, showed support for nonprofit and national service groups, and looked to inspire more residents to serve in their communities.

As part of the proceeding one local woman shared that applying to become an AmeriCorps member was her way of achieving her dreams. “The girl who wanted to save the world…I’m going to make her proud.” The North Texas chapter is grateful for the overwhelming support of North Texas mayors in helping people achieve their dreams for a brighter future and supporting national service in giving people an opportunity to save the world.
